Jeff Hsieh
Emeritus Professor and Director of the Multidisciplinary Pulp and Paper Engineering Program
Biography
Research Interests:
- Deinking difficult-to-remove pigmented inkjet from recycled paper using patented electric-field technology and new invention of liquid plasma treatment
- Enhancing fiber technology by purifying cellulosic and synthetic fibers for paper applications through in-plant process modification via additives and waste stream abatement
- Biorefining focused on pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials and conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, sludge, and waste streams into sugar and fermenting to bioethanol
- Using nanotechnology to improve papermaking and coating properties through preparation of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) from existing fiber and fines furnish
- Separating sludge skimming from food waste into valuable protein, additives, and biomedical or biodiesel through efficient transesterification using patented electric field technology
