Georgia Tech’s School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) organized a “Virtual Pi Mile” event on Saturday March 28 in light of the postponement of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association’s official, in-person event due to the Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19).

Participants in the 5k race, which was opened beyond ChBE to the greater Georgia Tech community, mapped out their own individual routes and ran with appropriate social distancing. They uploaded their times and optional selfies upon completion of the race.

Winners of the Virtual Pi Mile were (pictured left to right):

  • Graduate Student: Jon Grunewald, 16 minutes and 48 seconds
  • Postdoctoral Researcher: Maddie Ball, 23 minutes and 21 seconds

  • Martha Grover (1st place): “I stopped to smell the flowers.”
  • Mark Styczynski (2nd place): “I tried to dodge the hills, but found even more.”
