Throughout 2026, Georgia Tech's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE@GT) is celebrating its 125th anniversary.
Janice Whatley, academic program manager for ChBE's Graduate Program, has worked in the school since 1992 (she joined Georgia Tech in 1984) and has played an instrumental role in its evolution.
Enrique Michel, vice president of R&D, product lifecycle management (PLM) transformation for PepsiCo, earned his M.S. from ChBE in 2005 and interviewed Whatley about her experiences at Tech. Michel is a member of ChBE's External Advisory Board.
Introduction
Michel: Janice, you’ve been such a welcoming and steady presence for so many people in the ChBE community — students, faculty, and staff alike. I’d love to start by asking: what first brought you to Georgia Tech, and what has kept you here over the years?
Whatley: After graduating from college, I accepted a position with the Georgia Department of Education in downtown Atlanta. Seeking new opportunities for professional growth, I later joined Georgia Tech, where I was hired in Contract Administration in 1984. What began as a career move evolved into a lifelong connection with the Institute. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving in Contract Administration, Human Resources in the President's Office, and the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (since 1992).
Joining ChBE began as a professional opportunity, but it grew into something far more meaningful. The graduate students, faculty, staff, and the broader campus community inspired me every day through their unwavering commitment to excellence, collaboration, and service. Their passion, resilience, and sense of purpose have made my time in ChBE both rewarding and unforgettable.

Community and Belonging
You’ve helped so many students and colleagues feel like they truly belong here. Why do you think that sense of belonging is so essential to helping people thrive at Georgia Tech?
Students come from many different backgrounds, often facing new challenges and unfamiliar environments. Having someone who takes the time to listen, offers encouragement, or simply makes them feel seen can have a lasting impact on their ability to succeed.
Throughout my career, I have tried to create that sense of belonging for others because I know how important it is to feel that you matter. When people feel connected to their community, they are not only more likely to thrive themselves, but they are also more likely to support and uplift those around them. That creates a stronger, more caring ChBE for everyone.
Roles and Responsibilities
What part of your role as academic program manager do you find most rewarding?
One of the most rewarding parts of working closely with graduate students is seeing their growth over time. Being part of that journey and helping them overcome challenges and gain confidence is deeply fulfilling. Celebrating milestones by seeing students pass the qualifying examination, defend theses, graduate, and secure employment is one of the most satisfying parts of the role.
What qualities do you see in today’s students that make you excited for the future of ChBE?
Today's chemical and biomolecular engineering students bring an inspiring combination of curiosity, resilience, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. They are eager to learn and are not afraid to ask thoughtful questions or explore innovative solutions. Seeing their enthusiasm for learning, willingness to embrace new technologies, and dedication to improving society gives me great confidence that the next generation of engineers will continue to advance the field in meaningful and transformative ways.
Change Over Time
You’ve had a unique view of ChBE’s evolution over the years — the people, the programs, the culture. How have you seen the school change or grow during your time here? Are there any particular milestones or moments that stand out to you as defining turning points for the school?
Over the years, I have had the privilege of watching the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering evolve in meaningful ways. One of the most significant changes has been the expansion of our research and interdisciplinary opportunities.
I have also seen a growing focus on professional development, mentoring, and creating a more inclusive and collaborative learning environment, all of which help students thrive both academically and personally.
Inspiration and Legacy
Every individual in ChBE contributes to its success in a special way. Is there someone who has inspired you along the way?
Throughout my time in ChBE, I have been fortunate to work with many remarkable people. Professor Ronald W. Rousseau gave me the opportunity to join ChBE, and I will always be grateful to him and to his wife, Sandra, with whom I had the pleasure of working in the President's Office. Harolyn Ingram Temeng also played an instrumental role in my joining ChBE, and I am deeply grateful for her encouragement and support. I am equally appreciative of Associate Chairs Amyn S. Teja, Carson Meredith, Martha Grover, and Julie Champion, whose guidance, support, and leadership have enriched my experience and contributed tremendously to my journey in ChBE.
As we celebrate 125 years of ChBE, what does this milestone mean to you personally?
Reaching 125 years is a celebration of excellence, resilience, and continuous innovation. For me personally, it's an honor to be part of a community with such a rich history of advancing education, research, and societal impact. This milestone is both a moment to recognize the achievements of those who came before us and an opportunity to reflect on how each of us can contribute to the next chapter of ChBE's story.
When you think about the school's legacy, what do you hope future generations of students and staff will carry forward?
I hope future generations will preserve ChBE's culture of curiosity, collaboration, and commitment to making a positive impact. I hope they continue to value integrity, inclusivity, and the willingness to support one another. The greatest legacy of any academic community is not only the discoveries it makes but also the people it develops—individuals who are equipped to solve complex challenges while inspiring and uplifting those around them.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. It has been a rewarding and meaningful chapter in my life.
